- Argumentation and Rational Decisions, 5 December 2013

Co-organized by ArgLab/IFL and the European Conference on Argumentation

 Thursday, 5 December 2013, 9:15-18:00

(IFL, FCSH, Universidade Nova de Lisboa, Avenida de Berna 26, Edifício I&D, Sala Multisusos 3, 4th floor)

The workshop will focus on the role of argumentation and reasoning in decision-making, with a view on the rationality of the process and its outcomes. The main question addressed is therefore: How can we decide rationally on a future course of action? This question has vividly become a major practical and philosophical concern in the times of crisis in and around Europe (How to tackle the economic crisis? How to respond to the Arab Spring?). Presentations in the workshop will adopt the perspective of argumentation theory in order to examine the chief topics related to rational decision-making such as: practical reasoning, deliberation, the role of authority, models of decision-making dialogues, biases and fallacies in reasoning, and commitments of arguers.

See the workshop programme, and read the presentations' abstracts here.

The workshop is free to all faculty, researchers and students of the FCSH.
